The Grand Old Lady of Miri

The first leg of the 2nd day (23rd October 2011) tour of Miri city was to Canada Hill, a limestone ridge overlooking Miri City.   From the top of the Canada Hill we were able see a good view of Miri and its surrounding.  Canada Hill has a significant history as the site of Malaysia first oil well, now called the Grand Old Lady.  Her record stated that she started to operate in 1910 and had 62  years of life.  During her life time she had produced more than 650,000 thousand barrels of oil.    In 1973, Sarawak Shell Berhad handed Malaysia's first oil well to State Government to become a state monument.

At the site stood the Petroleum Science Museum.  Admission to the museum is free.  The museum traces the history and technological development of oil and gas industries.  That morning, GOLD group seemed to be the only visitors of the museum.
